Answers:
I have a problem in my school, who should I contact?
If you cannot talk to your school representative or find the answer on the help topic pages on this web-site, e-mail the divisional secretary with details. Download the document called “Writing about your case” for advice on the information we will need.

Will the NUT come into my school and cause trouble?
No. We only take action with your approval although we will decide what the appropriate action is. We like to try and work informally with school management to resolve a problem and this usually works. You can decide not to accept our advice on how to proceed. For more information read this document explaining how we will handle your case.

What are the rules for cover from September 2009?
The rules say teachers may only rarely be asked to cover and a document giving full guidance can be seen here.

What tasks can a teacher be required to perform?
The National Agreement on Workforce Reform stipulates that only tasks requiring the skills and expertise of a teacher can be required. Bureaucratic tasks, however important, cannot be required to be done and schools should make arrangements for support staff to undertake them. Please contact the divisional secretary by e-mail if your school is in breach of this statutory obligation. A list of bureaucratic tasks is here.

Can my school change the timings of the school day?
Only after consultation with staff. Full details of the procedure can be found here.

Do I have to apply for upper pay scale progression?
Whilst you do need to indicate you wish to be considered for threshold progression, it is the duty of the school to automatically consider anyone eligible for UPS2 or UPS3. See here and here.

What are the rules on discretionary leave of absence such as for moving or attending a wedding?

How can I find out about Job-sharing?
Employers have to consider requests for job-sharing and flexible working hours although they are not required to grant them in all cases. Our guidance document explains the procedure.
