Dave writes:

“Membership of the National Union of Teachers, through the Gloucestershire Association, entitles you to un-rivalled services and benefits. These include personal, legal and financial services and access to one of the best-regarded teams of full-time officials and legal staff in the trades union movement. At local level, Andy and his team of District Secretaries and other lay officers are also there to support and advise you.

The health of the Association, indeed the whole Union, also depends upon your interest and involvement, whether responding to surveys and ballots or coming along to meetings in your school or locality and to general meetings at county level. Here, procedures and formalities are kept to a minimum to enable issues-led discussion. We also try to make these meetings social, as well as business, events.

Despite the Union’s policy and endeavours to bring about one union for all teachers, recruitment has rarely been as competitive as at present. The NUT will not compromise on the breadth and quality of its service to members so has not joined the Dutch-auction engaged in by the other unions. What is more, taken over the medium-term, NUT membership costs no more than membership of those other organisations. Our membership, consisting only of fully-qualified professional teachers, continues to grow and we remain the largest teacher union in Europe.

If you have any queries about your membership, or about the workings and democracy of the Union, please get in touch with me."
