RETIRED MEMBERSHIP

Teachers who were in membership of the Union at the time of retirement are entitled to retired membership upon payment of an annual fee (£3.30), plus the appropriate local association fee and are entitled to those rights, services and benefits which are not excluded within the Rules of the Union.

Retired membership enables members to maintain their interest in education and to take a full part in the life and work of the Union. It also provides the means by which members can make contact with other retired colleagues and enjoy a wide range of social activities.

Payment of this annual subscription should be forwarded to the Records and Subscriptions Services, National Union of Teachers, Hamilton House, Mabledon Place, London WC1H 9BD.

Retired members can choose the association through which they wish to take up retired membership although there are obvious advantages in taking up membership where they live.

YOUR ENTITLEMENTS

Retired members have access to a wide range of benefits and services, including:

• regular receipt at your home address of the Union's magazine, 'The Teacher';

• attendance at and full participation in meetings of local associations;

• full participation in the activities of sections for retired members;

voting in local and national elections;

• eligibility for nomination to the Retired Teachers' Advisory Committee;

• life insurance and other investment facilities provided by the Teachers Marketing Group, for which the NUT is appointed representative;

• discounts on home insurance through Norwich Union and Teachers Marketing Group;

• motor insurance through the Union's recommended scheme with Norwich Union;

• discounts on shopping through the Countdown Scheme;

• discount travel facilities with the NUT Travel Club and with Countdown Travel;

• discounted rates of membership of the Green Flag;

• the Union's credit card, provided by the Bank of Scotland; and

• access to the NUT Member Loan Scheme, arranged through the Bank of Scotland.

Retired Membership - Exceptions

The Union's group insurance schemes for personal accident, personal property and malicious damage to motor cars, are all geared to the hazards of teaching and these benefits are, therefore, not provided for retired members, except in so far as such members may be involved in business arising from the holding of a Union office, under national or local association rules.

On the same basis, legal assistance involving expenditure of Union funds is not available to retired members. However, where a member was in receipt of legal assistance prior to retirement, that legal assistance will be continued if the member retires before completion of the case.

In Your Interest and Ours

Retired membership of the Union provides a wide range of benefits and services at a low cost. It maintains your involvement and contact with the Union and with colleagues. Above all, it enables the Union and serving colleagues to continue to benefit from your knowledge and experience, which are greatly valued.

TEACHERS' PENSIONS WEBSITE

Many members will be aware that Capita Group PLC administers the Teachers' Pension Scheme (TPS) on behalf of the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) under the name of "Teachers' Pensions". The official website address of Teachers' Pensions is www.teacherspensions.co.uk and the Union has been involved in the development of that website, which members will have visited in order to browse the helpful information provided.

It has now come to our notice that a company has set up two websites where the names are virtually identical to the official Teachers' Pensions website. These are www.teacherspension.co.uk and www.teacherpensions.co.uk. They are not in any way connected with the official Teachers' Pensions website or the DfES.

When visiting these sites you are presented with a list of sponsored websites. We are concerned that members may be misled about the official status of these in the sites and the sponsored sites contained within them. We should be grateful therefore if you would advise any members who may contact you that the sites are not approved by the Union nor do they have any connection with either Teachers' Pensions or the Department for Education and Skills.
